Router’s Firmware Update

Router is a device with which the Internet signals transmits through your home or office network. All of these routers come embedded with internal software that is what we call a Firmware. The firmware to a router is similar to that of android or iOS to the smart phones or windows to a computer. So basically it’s the operating system of your router.

Firmware is the part of the router that controls how your device behaves. Also, it enables your gadget to perform other functions such as associating to other networks, assigning IP’s to the gadgets that gets connected to your network, configuring the Firewall protection, managing the access point and much more.

Also, some special firewall allows creating a router-to-router connection but for that you need special router setup that is capable of doing so, such as the Netgear router setup.

But what is actually updating the firmware like?

For knowing this, first you need to know what’s inside your router. Generally, the common interaction that most people does with their routers is occasionally power cycle them when a slowdown encounters. Also, all we see is the Ethernet ports, power adapter and jack, LED lights indicating the status of the connection and the Wi-Fi antennas.  But the router is not just this; there are plenty of other things hidden inside.

Someday if you open your router that we not recommend, you will encounter a small circuit chip inside.  This is the CPU of the router that decides how to process the data intake and then send it on to the gadgets connected to the network. Not only this, routers also do have their own memory for the storage of programs and data temporarily.

When we install/update a firmware such as Netgear router firmware, we directly deal with the router’s storage. Router’s storage is commonly known as flash memory, flash storage or just “Flash”. When you install or update the firmware of your router, you send a firmware file to router using a special method. These firmware files consist of all the necessary programs and data to enhance the processing of your router.

These files are specific to routers; you can’t install Netgear router’s firmware to a Linksys router or extender. Also, you can’t use the Netgear router’s firmware for extender.linksys.com. After these files get loaded to the router, it replaces or overrides the old storage files with new ones. Thereafter, your router will itself restart and will start utilizing the new firmware.

Issue with the Firmware Update:

The router’s manufacturers typically launch several firmware updates throughout the year to maintain the much needed security of your network. According to the Netgear, more than 200 firmware updates was provided in the previous year.

However, there’s a major catch here. And that is the customers itself have to find, download and even install the firmware updates. And even computer experts remarked it as not an easy task.  Not only this, the instructions for updating the firmware of the router vary by brand.

That clearly indicates that most of the home routers never got the needed security updates. But it’s not as difficult as it seems. In fact, for most of the router the process is same – you need to login to your routerlogin using a web browser and the default login page such as Netgear router default IP. You must check the available updates at least quarterly.

Apart from this, you must also give notice to the security notifications for your network and also for the updates. Using an app like Netgear genie will be a great advantage. Last option is you can opt for the routers that are capable of self updates. These routers keep updating themselves whenever an update is available. Some good examples are Linksys and the Netgear. For the Netgear routers, you can even opt for the built-in update feature via the assistance of Netgear router support.
